A Taste of Shropshire

Table d’Hôte Menu

£25.00 for 3 Courses or Inclusive for DBB Guests

Sheltering in the lee of the Welsh Mountains and the Shropshire Hills, the rich arable valleys of our county were for many years Britain’s agricultural heartland. From this fertile soil the Industrial Revolution was born and one thing that linked the sturdy Shropshire yeoman and the Iron Men of the Industrial Age was their love of wholesome and satisfying food.

From the family farmsteads, forests and fish traps of Shropshire came a diverse fayre utilizing all that nature has to offer. Shropshire’s hearty tradition of fresh, flavoursome and filling food guided our chefs in the creation of our seasonal Taste of Shropshire Menu which brings together some of the most popular dishes and tastes for which our county is renowned.

It’s not fancy and it’s not fiddly but it is fine food!

For Starters

Chef’s Fresh Homemade Seasonal Soup of the Day

Delicious homemade soup served with farmhouse bread and Shropshire butter. Changes daily.

Shropshire Blue Cheese, Walnut & Roast Beetroot Salad with a Honey Dressing

Interestingly Shropshire Blue is one of the county’s newer traditions and a marketing triumph for the Scottish dairy that created it! Famous for its sharp, tangy taste and crumbly texture, our Shropshire Blue is made in the county and is beautifully complimented by a host of other more traditional flavours.

Pork & Apricot Terrine Wrapped in Wenlock Edge Farm Bacon

From pigs traditionally reared in the South Shropshire Hills, Wenlock Edge Farm produce has won many awards. Our homemade terrine is served with farmhouse bread and Shropshire butter.

Field Mushrooms Sautéed with Garlic and served on Toasted Farmhouse Bread (V)

There are thought to be as many as 20,000 species of fungi in the UK but forget the weird and wonderful; our common Shropshire field mushrooms have stood the test of time – a very popular Marches dish.

Main Dishes

Shropshire Fidget Pie

A 400 year old traditional Shropshire dish revived and made popular by the Hairy Bikers’ jolly to Ludlow. Chunks of gammon steak, apples, cider and cheddar cheese are wrapped in short crust pastry to create Shropshire’s answer to the Cornish Pasty – a portable meal for hardworking farming sorts. Served with potatoes and salad.

Vegetarian Fidget Pie

How could we allow our vegetarian guests to miss out? Cleverly replacing the gammon with a few secret ingredients yet retaining the signature apple and cheese tastes of the traditional fidget pie, our chefs have created the perfect vegetarian fidget! Served with potatoes and salad.

Sabrina River Trout with Traditional Light Lemon & Dill Dressing

Named for the Roman Goddess of the River Severn which runs the length of our county, no Wroxeter menu would be complete without a mention of our other big passion! The Romans of Viriconium relied heavily on Shropshire’s plentiful supply of river fish to feed its armies. Cooked simply with a light lemon and herb dressing our river trout is as delicious today as it would have been then.

Proper” Sausages or Traditional Faggotts (or some of each!)

Again from the award winning Wenlock Edge Farm these traditional favourites are served with mashed potatoes and Wroxeter Vineyard red wine gravy and or course, peas.
